BOOTIE PATROL

What’s all the fuss over metallic booties, why are white booties after Labor Day okay right now, and what happened to good old black and tan, you ask?  Well, first, fashion is supposed to be fun and not so serious, but two, I am pretty sure the 60s, 70s and 80s all came back at the same time, and they are currently squatting in our shoe aisles like Frank Gallagher on an episode of Shameless (if you have no idea what I am talking about, go binge watch that show immediately, and forget the booties). And they are not going anywhere; nor should they.

Bold shoes are popping up everywhere from the downtown cool-kid to the preppier suburban mommas because they are a great way to completely transform the feel of an outfit. These fun ankle boots come in all styles and colors, add a bold pop to your look and give the fall/winter chunky sweater and legging uniform a whole new life.  I’ve rounded up my top picks for fall and winter.

Leopard

Of all the recent trends in ankle boots, this is probably my favorite. I think we can all agree leopard is a technically a neutral, right?  Okay, maybe we can’t, but I am going to stick with that idea until I am told otherwise.  If you buy one new pair of shoes this season, make it leopard. Wear them with red velvet jeans and a white button down or chambray top, suede or leather leggings and an oversized sweater. Or a mini skirt, tights and cute top.  Wear these to work.  Wear them for play. They are the perfect outfit accessory.  Leopard looks good with almost all colors, but especially; red, the season’s favorite color.

White

It takes me a lot to get behind white shoes. Maybe it’s the childhood memories of white patent leather while having to sing in church (to be clear, no one needs to hear me sing). But whatever the case, I am starting to really love the look of white booties. I have two favorites from the right’s line up: the Harlow by Urban Outfitters with the gold buckle, and the boots with the tortoise shell heel- incredible. How to wear these: don’t over think it. Rock these with denim and a white top if you want to tie it together, or denim and chambray button down, all black to give an unexpected pop to a fall look, or a suede mini and turtleneck for a 60s throwback.

Velvet

This is just a yes for me. I don’t actually think velvet has ever gone out of style, but I do think we might all forget this fabric from March to September. But, I don’t remember a time I have ever seen so many cute pairs of velvet shoes, and I love velvet booties. They add a luxe, chic look to any outfit and they are so soft…can I pet them? But seriously, these are perfect with everything from jeans to a dress for a holiday party. I’ve included a few styles. The blue velvet booties from DSW are great with jeans, a cute pencil skirt or mid-length skirt. The boots by Buckle go from work to weekend. Pair them with jeans and crewneck sweater, a boho mini dress and jean jacket or leggings and oversized button down.

Red

I love all things red. Not just because it’s the color everyone is wearing, but because it is a flattering color on just about everyone. However, I did have a boss of a boss once tell me red shoes were only for ladies of ill-repute. Needless to say, the rest of the world may disagree with that fashion assessment.  While they are not for the faint of heart, and they will make a statement, wear them like you mean it. My favorite way to see red booties is with a cropped pair of vegan leather black pants, and an oversized black turtleneck sweater. That is perfectly chic and will allow you to wear them from day-to-night. Or pair them with skinny jeans and simple top, a moto jacket and pencil skirt, or with glen plaid pants and a Victorian-inspired top.

!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? ‘http’ : ‘https’;if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + ‘://’ + ‘widgets.rewardstyle.com’ + ‘/js/boutique.js’;d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__boutique === ‘object’) if(d.readyState === ‘complete’) {window.__boutique.init();}}(document, ‘script’, ’boutique-script’);

Metallic

Love em’ or hate em’, they are here to stay for a while. I think they are super fun, but these are definitely your outfit. As much as I love them with floral mini-skirts and stripes, and bolder colors, I really do think the best way to wear them is to keep the outfit clean and simple. Pair them with a graphic or plain white tee and distressed denim, or jeans and simple, cashmere sweater. Black and white anything, or all black; you can’t go wrong.
